It isn’t the cheapest option out there, but it’s a powerful photo editing software that leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to help artists create amazing photos in just a few clicks. One of the best Adobe Photoshop alternatives without subscriptions is Luminar AI. In our experience, GIMP was slightly less responsive and used a few more resources than its proprietary counterpart, but this can be easily forgiven on the basis that GIMP always has been and always will be free and open source. For this reason, GIMP has a similarly steep learning curve as Photoshop, but once you’ve made your way through a few tutorials, it’s quite comfortable. The interface is highly customizable, so you can pare things back or leverage multiple windows and toolbars as needed. If you desire a specific feature, there’s probably an add-on for it.

There’s also a huge community of developers and artists who have created a wide array of plugins, making this a highly adaptable program.

GIMP boasts a huge number of features and functions that rival Photoshop. In our hands-on review, we called Gimp "our top pick for the best free photo editor, and comes with a huge array of professional-quality functions for fine-tuning snaps and creating your own artwork from scratch. It’s slightly limited, but will give you a good idea of the app’s capabilities.GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a professional, open-source photography powerhouse that works on Linux, Windows, and macOS. So, it's both the best Adobe Photoshop alternative overall, and an excellent free alternative, too. There will be a free version for Windows, as well. “Because Fresco’s features matter, and we want them to be available no matter the platform, we’re working to get those remaining features in the app - quickly.” Adobe says it’s working to bring those into the app soon. Like on the iPad, the Windows version will also feature deep integrations with Adobe’s cloud storage to allow you to move seamlessly between machines and take your drawings to Photoshop and Illustrator.įresco for Windows, however, currently has fewer features than the iPad version. “It wasn’t an easy build but we worked closely with Microsoft and Intel to get the brushes right, and to squeeze from the hardware and software as much performance as possible,” the company notes in today’s announcement.

The company says it built Fresco for Windows from the ground up. Like its iPad brethren, Fresco for Windows features Adobe’s vector and raster tools for painting, drawing and sketching.

Today, Fresco is also coming to Windows, starting with Microsoft’s Surface line (starting with the Surface Pro 4, the Surface Go and all Surface Studio and Book devices) and Wacom Mobile Studio devices. In September, Adobe launched Fresco, its next-gen drawing and painting app, for the iPad.
